IUD U-CARE

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective birth control method. It is a small, T-shaped plastic device containing copper or hormones. A doctor inserts the IUD into the uterus. If you and your doctor discuss it before delivery, it can be done immediately after your baby is born. There is a plastic string tied to the end of the IUD that hangs through the cervix into the vagina.

There are two types of IUDs. A copper IUD is effective for 3 to 10 years, depending on the type used. A hormonal IUD is effective for 3 to 5 years, depending on the type used. But your doctor may talk with you about leaving it in longer. A hormonal IUD also reduces menstrual bleeding and cramping. Both types of IUDs most likely work by damaging or killing the man's sperm. This means that the woman's egg cannot join with the sperm. The IUD may also change the lining of the uterus so an egg will not settle there.
